Losing someone you love is a profound shock. In these difficult hours, knowing what to do next helps you focus on your family without feeling lost and alone.

1. Take a breath — you are not alone

There is no immediate rush for most formalities. You do not need to make any decisions in the next few minutes. The most important thing right now is that you are not alone.

2. Call Friedenstor — available 24 hours a day

This is one of the first and most important steps. Our team is available around the clock — in German, Russian, Ukrainian, English, and Hebrew. One call is all it takes: we will coordinate everything, collect your loved one, handle all the paperwork, and guide you through every step of the process.

3. Contact a doctor to certify the death

A doctor must officially certify the death and issue the death certificate. If the death occurred at home, call the family doctor. Outside of office hours, call the medical on-call service 116 117. In an emergency, call 112.

4. Notify immediate family

Let close family members and dear friends know. Ask someone to stay with you — you do not have to bear this alone.

5. Gather important documents

The following documents will be needed for the funeral formalities:

  • ID card or passport of the deceased
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate (if married) or divorce certificate
  • Health insurance card

Do not worry if you cannot find them right away — we will help you with that.

6. Do not rush any decisions

Type of burial, music, flowers, venue — all of this can wait. Focus on your family first. Our team will explain everything calmly, in your language, without pressure.

7. Trust in professional support

Friedenstor takes care of all the organisational and administrative tasks so you can focus on what matters most: saying goodbye and being with your family.

We are here for you — 24 hours a day, in your language.
